We have recently noticed a significantly high volume of scam and fraudulent communication circulating where fraudsters are trying to steal personal details, money and cause financial harm to both individuals and businesses. Over the previous month we have been informed of a significantly higher portion of clients being contacted by both phone and email communication pretending to be a representative from the Australian Taxation Office (“ATO”).
The ATO take your privacy seriously. We urge you to be alert to these types of scams and never send money, give your financial details or Tax File Number to someone you don’t know and trust. If you are contacted by the ATO by phone or email out of the blue from someone claiming to represent the ATO and that you are entitled to, or owe money – we suggest you advised them you have a tax agent and to please phone them – you do not need to say who your tax agent is. If the communication is legitimate, the ATO will have our details on file and contact our office.
